Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Parliamentarian Group Member as well as MP for Meemu Atoll Ahmed Shafeeg (Sappe) has said that government grant of large sums of money to members of Dhivehi Rahyithunge Party (DRP) from the aid received from various foreign donor agencies was the biggest offense carried out by the government.
Speaking at a general assembly of MDP held last night, Sappe said while President Maumoon is carrying out such acts in order to continue staying in power, government has not provided any appreciable assistance to ordinary citizens working for reform. He further said many islanders affected by tsunami continue to suffer various hardships and that government systematically impose various obstacles to prevent foreign aid from reaching ordinary citizens.

“3 islands were severely devastated by tsunami, residents of Kolufushi of Meemu Atoll still live in temporary shelters built on the harbor area, they are constantly exposed to the severe westerly winds during this time of the year and are forced to live in miserable conditions, residents of Vilufushi of Thaa Atoll and residents of Kadholudhoo of Raa Atoll live in similar conditions, after 3 years since the tsunami, the tsunami victims still continue to live in miserable conditions” said Sappe.

Sappe said last night’s meeting was aimed at expressing sorrow on the sudden death of Mohamed Saleem, MDP President of Gdh Branch of the party as well as to contemplate on the conditions of the tsunami victims.

At last night’s gathering President of MDP’s Consultative Council on Islamic Affairs Adam Naseem and Member of the MDP Parliamentary Group Adnan Haleem spoke on the life of Late Mohamed Saleem.

Speaking at the gathering Sheikh Adam Naseem noted that many of the customary practices practiced currently are alien to Islam and are imported to our modern culture from other religions. He such acts as “holding a moment of silence” was un Islamic and as such, such a moment will not be held in memory of Late Saleem.

Adnan Haleem said late Saleem was a charismatic person who worked hard with enthusiasm to bring reform to the country.

The gathering was attended by a large number of party supporters and well wishers.
