Report: Jaxlee
Many employees of Koodoo have been engaged in catching and killing protected birds. Miadhu has obtained information that group of employees of Gaafu Alif Koodoo whilst on a picnic were catching a large number of protected birds and have killed them. This was confirmed to Miadhu by Gaafu Alifu Police.
Lars Corporal Ilyas Abdulla told Miadhu, although no sign of dead or live birds were found on the dhoani used to go to the picnic, some of the people who went on the picnic, have showed pictures taken during the picnic that confirms the wanton act of killing. The pictures showed dead birds and turtle eggs removed.
“Some people who went on the picnic carried out these acts, when we searched the dhoni we found no signs of such activity, however when we got the pictures we are now investigating the crime, however the In charge is out of the station but he is now on his way, the crime will be fully investigated” said Ilyas.
Dispute among the picnickers arose when some of the caught the birds and killed them. When those who resented such acts informed the offenders that they would report the matter to the authorities, the offenders left the uninhabited picnic island, Gdh Kedheraa. The offenders left Kedheraa and returned to Koodoo leaving behind those people who refused to take part in the killing.
People left behind on Kedheraa called Miadhu yesterday at around 3.00 pm in the afternoon and informed that the offenders have departed to Koodoo leaving them behind. They also informed Miadhu that all their food stuffs were onboard the dhoni which departed for Koodoo.
The people left behind on Kedhharaa Island told Miadhu that offenders left to capture the birds secretly in the middle of the night and many protected birds. The people also informed Miadhu that that the key man involved in the killing spree was a person known as Younus from the Human Resources Department of Koodoo. They further revealed that many dead birds can be seen on the island and that they have taken pictures as evidence.
They said “we have reported the matter to the police and the key man involved is Younus of the Human Resources Department”.
Thinadhoo Police confirmed that these were left behind on Kedheraa. The people left behind on kedheraa were brought back on a ferry from Koodoo.
The people who reported the matter to Police told Miadhu that “When police informed that they did not find any sign of bird capture we were very surprised, we have informed the police that their statements conflicts with what we see, when we checked the dhoni on our arrival at Koodoo, we saw a lot of evidence like bird feathers, we have taken pictures, an army officer is also involved in the killing spree”.
A person among them told Miadhu that police did not take the case seriously. He further told Miadhu that this was a national issue.
