Govt. pursuing full recovery - President

President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom had assured that the Government is relentlessly pursuing the task of full recovery from the effects of the tsunami disaster. He made the statement in a message on the occasion of Unity Day.

In his message to the nation on the third anniversary of the tsunami disaster, President said that, over the past three years, Government had worked continuously to repair and reconstruct damaged homes and infrastructure and rebuild the lives of the victims across the country. He emphasized that the limited resources available nationally meant that the Government had to rely on extensive donor assistance to ensure that the program would reach a successful completion as soon as possible. He elaborated that the Government is continuing to seek additional donor assistance to bridge the funding gap. He added that he had made use of every possible opportunity presented to him during his overseas visits and meetings with key foreign stakeholders to alert the international community to the urgent need to complete the post-tsunami national recovery program in the Maldives.

The President recalled that the humanitarian efforts in the immediate aftermath of the tsunami exemplified the importance of working as a community for the benefit of the nation. Highlighting that the Government had therefore decided to commemorate the anniversary of the tsunami annually as Unity Day. He called on the people to pursue the full recovery in a spirit of peace, solidarity and harmony and to place national interest above that of the individual.

“Islam teaches us the importance of strengthening fraternal ties and maintaining societal harmony. Unity Day is an occasion for every Maldivian to reflect on these values” President said.

President Gayoom thanked the people for the outstanding support and assistance that they were providing the Government throughout the past three years in the effort towards full recovery from the devastation of the tsunami.
