Report: Soodh
Three years on from the devastation of the Asian tsunami on 26 December 2004, the Maldives has made considerable progress in its recovery efforts to build back better, UN has said. This was mentioned in a Press statement released yesterday.
The press statement said that the unwavering resilience, commitment and spirit of national unity have driven the recovery and reconstruction process over the past three years, and while challenges remain, the successes should be celebrated.
In the Press statement, it was mentioned that the UN system immediately responded to the disaster, and viewed recovery as a process of transforming the challenges into opportunities for accelerated sustainable long-term development.
Building back better took many forms according to UN Press Release.
UN press release noted that it includes; Repairing and reconstructing schools offered opportunities to improve the quality of education—to introduce child-friendly, active-learning concepts, hygiene education, and psychosocial support, promotion of behavioral changes needed for improved nutrition and environmental responsibility, and safe and appropriate play equipment using local materials. Reestablishing health facilities offered opportunities to improve the quality of services and encourage greater equity in access. Rebuilding houses and community infrastructure provided opportunities to create sustainable human settlements that are disaster resilient and use environmentally responsible systems of power, water, and sanitation. Similarly, restoring livelihoods meant more than replacing productive assets; it incorporated diversification and greater economic participation, especially for women and young people.
