Report: Soodh

The main objective of Maldives National Congress (MNC) is not to win the upcoming Presidential elections, but to win most number of seats from the People’s Special Majlis prior to the presidential elections, Party leader as well as MP of Special Majlis for Laamu Atoll Mohamed Naeem (Monaza) has said.

In an interview given to Miadhu Daily yesterday, Naeem said that he does believe that every party has to come to power. Since the Majlis have to make the government accountable whoever is ruling, MNC’s main objective will be to gain majority at the Parliament.

“We will do what ever we could do to win as many number of seats at the Majlis” Naeem said.

Before government closed for Eid Holidays, MNC submitted the membership forms 3 times and since the Commissioner has said that more than 3000 membership forms are valid and the party can be registered, MNC held their first inaugural meeting at Isdhoo last Sunday night. Naeem said that this meeting was held in Laamu atoll as some of their basic principles were reflective of Laamu atoll’s heritage. He said that the 3 stars in the flag of MNC represents 3 things which the party believes should be among the people. Those are solidarity, equality and justice. He said that these things are related to Laamu atoll, history tells us.

“Justice, which we believe is the most important thing that should be among the people, was best in Laamu atoll. That was Funadhee Khatheeb dhanna kaleyfaanu. The other person is Hassan Thajuddin. These were the first judges who sentenced without the influence of the government” Naeem said.

Another reason for holding the meeting in Laamu atoll was that, since Laamu atoll contains a huge area of land because of the way it’s geographically formed. Our aim is to establish 5 commercial zones in Maldives like Male’. He said that many people could not come to Isdhoo due to rainy conditions, but more than 750 people attended the meeting. He said that 300 people were required attend to the meeting the inaugural meeting of the party and thanked all those who attended. He said that work is under way to provide elections commissioner the minutes of the meeting.

Naeem had earlier said that MNC whose member ship is over 5000 have no connection with PA.
