At the session of the Special Majlis held yesterday, Majlis passed to elect one member from each electoral sector. The endorsement to elect one member from each electoral sector was one the major amendments that were previously not put to vote. This was passed during the vote taken yesterday afternoon on the Chapter on the People’s Majlis. The vote was taken after consideration of those redrafted amendments of the Chapter on the People’s Majlis, and the amendments put forward by the members to those re drafts submitted by the Drafting Committee.
In the new constitution the article on the election of the members of the Chapter on the people’s Majlis states that in accordance with procedures and principles stipulated in the articles of the this constitution, each administrative sector shall determine specific electoral areas and that one candidate shall be elected from each electoral area.
One member is to be elected from each electoral area by secret ballot among the candidates standing for election. Appropriate legislation shall state how each administrative sector and the electoral areas shall be determined. Further the population that forms a specific administrative sector shall be distributed equally among the electoral areas.
2 members from each atoll and 2 from Male’ are elected under the present constitution. Further another additional 8 members are appointed by the President. However under the constitution only elected members will form the Majlis.
