Today is the International Day for People with Special Needs. Acting Minister of Higher Education and Employment Abdul Rasheed Hussain said many programs have been planned to reflect this year’s theme “Decent work for people with disabilities”. He made the statement in a special message released on the occasion of the day.

The message sends out the Minister’s best wishes of the day to the people with special needs, to their families, to all those working to protect the rights of the people as well as to the people of the Maldives.

Noting that the draft of the national policy on people with special needs has already been formulated in collaboration with the help of Handicap International and local associations working for the protection of rights of the people with special needs, Minister in the Message thanked Handicap International and other local associations for their immense help in the field.

The Message revealed that Maldives had ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on 2 October 2007.
