Maldives decides women can become president

Maldives for the first time has decided women can become president of the country, removing a condition in the constitution barring women to take the highest post of the island nation. The decision was reached when the Special Majlis which is deliberating on the few unfinished chapters of the new constitution voted in on the conditions of the person who stand for election of the president. Any one who is above 35 years can seek the high post in a multi- party contested election. The decision was welcomed by a large number of people saying it is a victory for this moderate Islamic country.

The Majlis also decided to remove an existing barrier for a person who is married to a foreigner to become president. This decision also was reached during the vote on the chapter of the President. Many people hailed this decision and said these are major steps towards democracy and reform.

Maldives is a hundred percent Muslim country which encourages empowerment of women as a key policy. Schools in Maldives enroll almost equal number of girls and girls have competed and excelled in studies and other fields. Some sectors have more women than men. Women are being encouraged to join and participate more in the political life of the country.

Maldives has also made history in the past in bringing women to the mainstream of politics and governance when Queens ruled the country when it was a monarchy few hundreds years ago.
