At the session of the Special Majlis held yesterday, after a month of recess, the debate on the remaining oaths included in the appendixes was heated up as the debate ultimately focused on the assassination attempt on President Gayoom made on the 8 of this month at Ha. Huvarafushi.
During the debate, which was opened for only half hour, every DRP Members who spoke condemned the attack. In this regard Mohamed Majdhee Ibrahim MP for Alif Alif Atoll condemned the attack in poetic language and instead of debating the oaths included in the appendixes offered his gratitude in flowery poetry to Mohamed Jaisham the savior of the President.
Opposition in expressing their dissatisfaction on such poetry raised points of order and stated that the condemnation of the attack was not part of the agenda. Opposition said such condemnations should be done at a special sitting. Angry opposition members noted that there were many ordinary citizens who were killed by the President and none of them were ever mentioned. The opposition noted that it was meaningless to continue with condemning the attack and urged the Speaker Qasim to stick to the agenda scheduled for the sitting.
However Speaker Qasim noted that Majlis can only smoothly according to norms when Members adhere to regulations. He urged all members to follow the Majlis regulations.
However without heeding to Speaker Qasim’s plea, DRP Members spent most their time condemning the attack. Abbas Ibrahim MP for Gd. Atoll said those opposition Memebrs who raise points of orders are part of the conspirators. Following MP Abbas’s remarks, MP Reeko Moosa Manik, MP Colonel Nasheed amd MP Riyaz raised their voices in protest.
MP for Hdh Atoll Abdulla Naseer and MP for Aneesa Ahmed also condemned the attack.
Opposition Members urged Speaker Qasim not to provide the opportunity to play drama inside Majlis Chambers. They also reminded the Speaker this was the year of the presidential elections.
MP for Laamu Atoll Mohamed Naeem said the institution which looked after the President’s security has failed and called on the top executive in charge to resign.
At yesterday’s sitting, the oath of President, Vice President and the Chief Justice was sent back to the Drafting Committee. Amendments proposed to the Bill on Presidents were also received during yesterday’s sitting.
