Assistant Commissioner of Maldives Police Services (ACP) Abdulla Riyaz has revealed that the alertness of President Gayoom was what saved him from the assassination attempt by young man from Ha.Huvarafushi on the 8 of this month. He made the statement at a press given yesterday to brief the media on the assassination attempt.“President was saved by the security personnel and by the President’s alertness” said ACP Riyaz.
The video presentation shown at the beginning of the press conference showed very clearly President Gayoom saving himself as indicated by the police he was very alert. His courage and strength was further evident from the interviews granted to TVM and Voice of Maldives shortly after the incident.
Police yesterday declined to point finger at any particular organization or party saying the investigation was at a very infant stage and said that it was too early to reveal the names of those arrested.
While police has obtained confessions from Murushid the assailant of the President and his accomplice Ahmed Hafeez of Sosange of Huvarafushi they did not provide any background information of the two. Although Huvarafushi island office had previously released a document to media which indicated that Murushid was guilty of many crimes from his childhood, Police did not offer any such information.
