Ibrahim Shafiu, Controller of Immigration and Emigration speaking to Miadhu has said that in most cases, import of foreign labor is just like drug trafficking.

In an interview granted to Miadhu, Shafiu said that foreign labor is obtained as a business deal, in collaboration with the foreigner, to conduct a shared business

“Many Maldivian going abroad for medical reasons or for various other reasons meet these foreigners and arrange to conduct the foreigner’s business in Maldives on profit sharing basis; that foreigner comes to Maldives with US $ 3000.00 and that amount is sufficient for him to open saloons and tailor shops; the fact of the matter is, the foreigner is brought in a business arrangement, to conduct his business in Maldives in a profit sharing manner” said Shafiu in a previous interview given to Miadhu.

Statistics from Employment Ministry shows that this year till end of August, an average 1000 foreigners were brought for a month. At the end of August 2007, foreigner population in Maldives stands 63,767.00.
