IFRCS seeks US $ 3.3 Million for Maldives

International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Society (IFRCS) are seeking US $ 3.33 Million to fund various programs to be implemented in 2008 to 2009 by the society in Maldives.

According to Relief Web, the programs planned gives priority to national development, alleviation of poverty in improving the quality of life.

While Maldives has a population of 300,000 people widely and unevenly distributed over 199 islands, sea swells cause severe flooding, on account of the low lying nature of the islands and pose the main disaster risk for the country notes ReliefWeb. The main health threats are dengue fever and chikangunya.

Finance Minister Qasim in submitting the proposed budget for 2008 to the Majlis has said that Mrf. 746 Million Rufia has been secured as grant aid towards reconstruction efforts of the country from the devastating effects of tsunami of 2004.

International Society of Red Cross and Red Crescent Society have provided lot of aid in the reconstruction of the country from the effects of the tsunami of 2004. In this regard construction of houses for tsunami victims, providing safe drinking water, establishing proper sewerage systems and installation of desalination plants are just few areas where the assistances were afforded.
