Maldivian Embassy in Sri Lanka has revealed last night that it is unlikely that any Maldivian were affected as a result of the bomb explosion at Nugegoda bazaar in Sri Lanka yesterday evening.

Speaking via telephone second secretary of the Maldivian Embassy Mujthabaa said “We are checking on it, according to information received there is no Maldivian or any foreigner among the injured or fatalities list”.

He further said Maldivian does not normally live in Nugegoda area and that Maldivian mostly visits Nugegoda for shopping and as the bomb went off at a time when most of the shops were closed it is unlikely that any Maldivian were affected as a result of the blast. It is reported that 17were killed and 37 were injured in the blast.

There were 2 bomb blasts in Sri Lanka yesterday. According to Reuters both these blasts were carried out by Tamil tigers. The first the two blasts was a suicide blast carried out by women and was detonated in front of the Social Affairs Minister’s Office. According to sources the attack on Nugegoda was carried out by detonating a parcel bomb. The attacks came just 24 hours after the Tamil leader Prabarkaran’s public statement that he no confidence in the Sri Lankan government. However the tigers have not assumed the responsibility for the attacks.
