Estimated budget for year 2008 was submitted to People’s Majlis yesterday at its fourteenth sitting of the third session held this morning.
Minister of Finance and Treasury Qasim Ibrahim presented the proposed budget to the Majlis briefing on the highlights of it and the strategies designed to draw revenue for the expenditures.
Following the presentation of the budget, Majlis elected a 15 member adhoc committee to review the budget in accordance with the Rules of Procedure of the Majlis. The Majlis will debate on the proposed budget within 7 days of its submission.
The next agenda item considered was the election of a seven member adhoc committee to review the name proposed by the president for the post of Auditor General.
After the election of the adhoc committee, the Majlis began the second reading of the Bill on Maldives Pension Act. Five Members including Minister of Legal Reform Information and Arts Mohamed Nasheed spoke on the Bill. More members were still waiting to speak when the chair adjourned the meeting having run out of time.
At the beginning of yesterday’s sitting, Minister of Construction and Public Infrastructure Mohamed Mauroof Jameel were asked parliamentary questions by Member for Thaa Atoll Mohamed Shareef. The provided answers to the questions and answered 11 other supplementary question.
Yesterday’s sitting was attended by 47 Members and was chaired by Speaker of the Majlis Ahmed Zahir.
