Report: Soodh

President of Maldives Human Rights Commission (MRCH) Ahmed Saleem has said the comments of Home Minister Kamaaluhdheen stating that “crimes can only be reduced when those who commit these crimes stop committing them”, is not only ridiculous but does not make sense. Home Minister Kamaaluhdheen made the statement on last Saturday speaking to members of the press at the press room “Fansavees” at Dharubaaruge.

Saleem said that offenders normally adhere to their bad behavior even though they are told abandon such ways. Saleem said even though it is the responsibility of the Home Minister to curb street violence, the onus is on the police to enforce law and order.

Mohamed Zahir, Deputy President of the Human Rights Commission said that the protection of the general public is of utmost importance and what ever that needs to done to ensure their protection must be carried out. He said however the police should act within the regulations specified.

“It is disheartening to know that there is no Act of Parliament which specifies the powers of the police or their responsibilities, we strongly support the formation of such an Act” said Zahir.

Zahir further said considering the present status quo of the country, a Police Act is necessary otherwise everything will be in chaos.

President of MHRC Saleem said the release of convicts serving time in to the community for any reason is matter of huge concern. Saleem said that it is the responsibility of the police to maintain law and order.

“Offenders should be given their due punishment, otherwise it can be seen as a violation of other’s rights, we support all those engage in maintaining law and order to give appropriate punishment.” said Saleem.
