President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has urged members of the general public to cooperate with the Government in its efforts to root out corruption. In his message on the occasion of International Anti-Corruption Day, which was marked yesterday, President Gayoom highlighted the importance of refraining from any action that could facilitate corruption.
President said that the Government attached a high importance to rid society of corruption, and noted that corruption was a menace that tarnishes the image of governments and countries across the world. He recalled the measures that the Government had introduced over the years to root out corruption, including the passage through the People’s Majlis of the Anti-Corruption Board Act and the subsequent establishment of the Board on 21 April 1991. He emphasized the work undertaken by the Anti-Corruption Board in foiling a number of acts corruption scandals over the years.
In his message, President Gayoom noted that the development of the Anti-corruption Board had been an issue of high priority for the Government. In particular, he stressed the efforts undertaken to develop human resources at the Board. He said that, with the grace of the Almighty Allah, the results of this investment had been an important success. He also expressed his confidence that, with the enactment of the new constitution, Anti-Corruption Board would become more independent and efficient.
The United Nations Convention, in the October 31, 2003, signed a resolution number 58/4 declaring the 9th of December each year as the World Anti Corruption Day.
