Home Minister Abdulla Kamaaluhdheen has said that in addition to punitive measures for convicts, prison regulations need to be revised. He made the statement speaking on the emergency issue of increasing street violence in Male’. The issue was raised by MP for Male’ Ibrahim Ismail (Ibra).
Abdulla Kamaaluhdheen said that people who has been sentenced in absentia were living in Male’ due to unsuccessful attempts to capture them by the relevant authorities.
Members speaking at the debate time said the cause of the increasing street violence in Male’ was lack of adequate punitive measures for the offenders. Kamaaluhdheen said penitentiary regulations allow inmates to spend time with their families as a corrective measure. He said these regulations are being misused and many offenders often spend time in Male’ and that it is time government revised penitentiary regulations.
MP Ibrahim Ismail speaking on the issue said of late streets of Male’ has become unsafe and dangerous. He said the prosperity of a community depends on the prevalence of law and order.
Members also expressed their concern over the ongoing street violence and capabilities of the police service to maintain law and order. They also noted the proportionately high budget allocated to the service.
Ibra further said although many of incidents of violence has stemmed from the abuse of drugs, he cannot solely put the blame on drug offenders. He said that many social issues of the community have led to the present status quo.
