The Principal of Education and Vocational Training Center for Children in Maafushi, Ahmed Hameed has said that most children are brought there as their parents could not take care of them.
Principal of the Center located in Kaafushi Maafushi said that 25 to 30 children are brought there every year and some them are brought because of the financial status of their parents while other parents send their children there as they are so disobedient.
Hameed said that the objective of the Center is to provide basic necessities for the children brought there, teach them and also teach them a work they could do to earn a living. He noted that most children brought there are from atolls. At the moment, primary education is provided at the Center, but secondary education is provided at Maafushi School for those children who request for it and currently, 11 children from the Center are attending Maafushi School, Hameed said. He remarked that 1 student from the center completed O level at Maafushee School in year 2006 while 2 students from the center completed O level last year.
Almost all children at the Center are of age 10 to 18 years and all of them are boys. He said that most children brought there are not even circumcised even and the staff there doesn’t know about it. But they know it from talks exchanged between the children and now, they question every child about the issue before being registered there.
“Earlier when children are brought here, we didn’t know that they are not circumcised. But now, we ask them about it and we do it here if it was not being done. Last year also, 4 children were circumcised and it included a 14 year old boy” Hameed said.
An art exhibition which shows art work of children there is to be held this year. A total of 56 children are there at the moment.
