Ministry of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has met with Lord Nesby, member of the House of Lords of UK and Chairperson of the British Maldivian All Parliamentary Group yesterday at Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
At the meeting Minister Shahid talked about the devastating effects of climate change on small island states and the relationship between sustainable environment and human rights. Minister also talked about the various efforts made by the Maldivian government to make other countries aware of the impacts. Further Minister also highlighted the reform agenda undertaken by the president Gayoom to introduce a modern democracy to Maldives.
Highlighting the need to improve human rights in the country, Minister Shahid noted that Maldives was signatory to 8 of the 9 conventions on human rights. He said Maldives was proud of such achievement and said he was sure that he would receive the assistance of the neighboring countries on the matter.
Lord Nesby at the meeting talked about importance of protecting human rights and praised the government’s work in this area. He said that he very satisfied with the government’s policy on environmental issues and highlighted the important role Maldives played in the Alliance of Small Island States. Lord Nesby also informed Minister Shahid the he would inform the UK Parliament of the progress of reform initiative and that he would schedule a parliamentary debate soon.
The meeting in addition to Lord Nesby was attended by Lady Nesby and Assistant Director at the Ministry Ibrahim Hoodh.
