Bloodshed Not Jihad - Grand Mufti

19 December 2007
Report: Soodh

The Grand Imam of Mecca Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al Alsheikh has said bloodshed and bombings are not considered as Jihad for Islam and such acts tantamount to terrorism. He said so in a one hour sermon which he delivered in Namira Mosque in Mount Arafath where more than 2 million Muslim pilgrims gathered at the climax of this year's Hajj. The eloquent and much revered Mufti said it was sad that Islam is facing unnecessary condemnation and humiliation because of these inhuman acts of terrorism perpetrated in some Muslim countries. The honor and integrity of Muslims are being affected apart from the loss, injuries and fear suffered by Muslims and others, he said.

The Grand Sheikh warned Muslims that Islam is a religion of compassion and kindness and not of inhuman cruelty. Islam also advocated peace, justice rights and development. He went to say that bloodshed and explosions would not achieve any success to Islam but on the other hand such actions by Muslims would tarnish the honor and reputation of Muslims and will be to the advantage of enemies of Islam. He called with emotion that Muslims must never take to such evil actions.

Imam highlighted the great importance of Muslim scholars to provide Muslims more information on these issues. He said it is a duty of scholars to do so on the basis of Holy Quran and Sunna of Holy Prophet. They must not give opinion against these principles.

The sermon also outlined the need for Muslim youth to engage in useful works and refrain from various ills they will be targeted by enemies. Role of women was also included in the talk stressing that they have a great duty as mothers and wives. The issue of bringing up children is very important, and parents and institutions responsible to bring up children should be mindful of their great responsibility. They must be brought up on Islamic foundations of values and good discipline. The Sheikh said bringing up children is a very difficult task and we must never neglect it.

The Imam also speaks about the broader principles of Islam.
