There is huge support for the US Marines medical team working in Addu atoll and Fuahmulah, the head of the team, Dr. Lubank has said.

In an interview given to Miadhu Daily, Dr. Lubank said from the Fuahmulak Hospital that a lot of people had already noted their names when the team arrived.

“A lot of people have noted their names on hearing of our arrival. We are giving treatment for ophthalmology and dentistry. We are only removing the teeth which need to be. No other service could be given as we don’t have the required equipment” Dr. Lubank said.

He said that Fuahmulak hospital had no equipment has no dental equipment and that they are giving service with the help of the little equipment they brought.

Abdul Hakeem Hassan, the in- charge of Fuahmulak Hospital said that over 200 people have noted names to get treatment when the team arrived.

“We don’t have that service here. We neither have equipments nor a dentist. So people are forced to travel to Male’ or Addu atoll to get dental treatment” Hakeem said.

The American team said that they are giving ophthalmology treatment in addition to dental treatment and about 250 people were given eye treatment till yesterday.

“We consult and give advice on eye problems and do minor eye surgery. We have done cataract surgery for 8 people and all of them are fine now. We put lens after the operation. We brought different sizes of lenses. Here also, we face difficulties in getting equipment and also difficulty is faced in the operation theatre as well” Dr. Lubank said.

He said that a lot of people who come for eye treatment require cataract surgery, but due to lack of awareness, they have not opted for surgery.

“Our teams consist of Specialists. They are well-experienced. But people are afraid of surgery. Hopefully next time we come, this problem will be solved with the experience of those undergoing surgery this time” Dr. Lubank said.

Hospital informed that over 600 people noted names for eye treatment, but noting names have been stopped as the team could not consult everyone in the few days they are working.

“Eye treatment also could not be given here. The Americans knew how much these people wanted it when they (the Americans) arrived here. Many islanders wanted to test their eyes. But they did not bring the equipment for that. But, they are now giving this service after bringing equipment from Addu”.

The activities carried out the American team in Addu Atoll, Fuahmulak and Laamu atoll was shown to press. Military training conducted jointly by MNDF and US navy was also shown.

“Maldivian soldiers are well disciplined and young. They really are well trained. Our soldiers have also gained a lot of information from these Maldivians” Chief Commander of the US team said.

Maldives’ Army officer said about 60 soldiers is taking part in these trainings. US team said that they are giving marshal arts training in Addu Atoll.

US embassy in Sri lanka said that they hope to conduct such medical services in bigger atolls of Northern Maldives in the future.
