Home Minister Abdulla Kamaaluhdheen has said that efforts being made to stop the ongoing serial gang fights. Kamaaluhdheen made the statement while speaking at a news conference held at media conference hall “ Fansavees”, ( “Fansavees” literally means twenty five) in Dharubaaruge.
Minister of Justice Mohamed Muiz, Minister of Home Affairs Abdulla Kamaaluhdheen and Attorney General Azima Shukoor was present at the news conference to brief the media.
When posed the question whether he accepted the fact that maintaining law and order is beyond the capacity of security forces and that the government has failed, Kamaaluhdheen replied that “fail” is not a word he liked to use and that at this point in time instead of talking about failures focus should be on finding a solution.
The answers to the questions of the media were based on strengthening the enforcement of punishment given to offenders and establishing a secure jail.
Kamaaluhdheen accepted the fact Maafushi Jail was not suitable to house inmates and was erected for that purpose. He also pointed out government decision to establish a low security jails in Thilafushi and in Addu Atoll.
Attorney General Azima Shukoor briefed the media on prisoner rights.
Home Minister speaking on the arms used by mobs in the street violence said that already more than 200 items used during the fights have been confiscated.
At the news Kamaaluhdheen confirmed that the 4 persons wanted with regard to the murder of Ali Ishaar of H. Kubraa were black listed.
