09 December 2007
Report: Soodh

Dr. Hassan Saeed, Former Attorney General has claimed that if the issue is not raised with the concerned authorities of the United Nations, Maldives stands to loose 40 miles of its sovereign territory from the south of Maldives by the end of this December. He made the statement speaking at the assembly of the united opposition front held at Dharubaaruge last night.

Speaking at the assembly Dr. Hassan said that united front by the opposition parties is calling for the establishment of transitional government in order to make the first multi party elections of Maldives a free and independent affair.

“It is not the intention of the united opposition front to assume the powers of the government, what we want is to delegate to delegate the responsibility to professionals to ensure, free, fair and all elections are held” said Dr. Hassan Saeed.

Dr. Hassan speaking at the assembly of the opposition front claimed that although the government believes that free and fair elections can be held, the present government is simply incapable of holding such an election.

“I resigned from the government on the 5 of last August, 3 days prior to my resignation I told President Gayoom, in the presence of his ministers, that he has failed, I also told him that his government has failed, I told him that government was incapable of handling the issues faced with the country, further I told him I was ashamed to be part of his cabinet” said Dr. Hassan.

He said the governments claims of shortage of funds to solve the hardship faced with the tsunami victims are not true. He claimed what is true is that government secures funding for anything and everything that it wants to do.

“Government has signed agreements with international donor agencies for sums exceeding US S 300 million as grant aid, which is still not processed not due to the irresponsibility of the government” claimed Dr. Hassan Saeed.

Former Attorney General Dr. Hassqn Saeed said that while Planning Ministry’s statistics indicate that 41% of our teachers and instructors require additional training, government’s priority is to grant free text books and stationeries.

“Our people’s complaints are not because they given free text books and free stationeries, our people’s complaints are mainly on the quality of education given to their children, government is to these issues is to provide free text books in order to solve the problems of the education system” said Dr. Hassan.

“The challenges faced with our people are more complex than building a nation from scratch, the challenges are larger than any single party, we have to face them with a united resolve and determination, just as this united opposition front form the transitional government, we must continue to be united even after the elections and until we have successfully completed the work of building the nation” said Dr. Hassan.
