President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has called on the fisheries sector to ensure that all forms of fisheries in the Maldives are dolphin-friendly. He made the appeal in his message on the occasion of Fishermen’s Day 2007.
President Gayoom highlighted the importance of internationally certifying fish and fish products that are exported from the Maldives. “Certification ensures that our quality is maintained to the highest standard, and it builds our reputation in foreign markets”, the President emphasized. He called on all exporters to ensure that their products meet international environmental standards.President said that the Government would leave no stone unturned in facilitating the further growth of fisheries in the country. “Fisheries is our lifeblood, and the Government is committed to opening new avenues for the development of fisheries in the Maldives”, he noted.
In the message, President Gayoom sent his sincere greetings and good wishes to the Maldivian fishermen and their families, as well as fishing vessel owners and everyone involved in the industry. He also conveyed greetings to the Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Marine Resources, Hussain Hilmy, and the hardworking staff at the Ministry.
