Anni warns refusal may result in civil disobedience

President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom refusal to the people’s request for an interim government, may result in civil disobedience, MDP Chairperson Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) has said. He said this in an interview given to Miadhu Daily.

Anni said that there is fear of civil disobedience if the President does not ratify a possible bill that the Sp. Majlis pass about transition.

IDP Vice President Mohamed Hassan Manik said that IDP would boycott the next Presidential elections if the President does not ratify a possible bill on transition and said that work is under way to get the backing of Alliance for this decision.

Social Liberal Party (SLP) Parliamentary group member Mohamed Nasheed (Colonel) said that the President has to do what the people wants and if the president does not ratify such a bill which the people wants, SLP would also talk with its members about boycotting the elections if that is what the unity alliance wants. MDP Chairperson Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) also responded to the comments made by the President in his speech at Dhaalu Meedhoo.

In the President’s trip to Dhaalu atoll, he met the islanders of Dhaalu Meedho yesterday and said that there is no reason that the Maldives should have a transition government and those calling for it want to create unrest within the country. He said that a transition government is not necessary for free and fair elections.
