No justification for transitional govt. – President

President Gayoom has said that there is no justification whatsoever behind opposition calls to establish a transitional government and that the motive of the opposition was to create unrest and to destabilize society. President Gayoom highlighted that the precondition for a free and fair election was not the establishment of a transitional government. He made the statements while addressing the residents of south Nilandhe Atoll Meedhoo yesterday.

President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom said that he is firmly committed to fulfilling the needs of residents of all islands.

President said that, over the years, the Government had successfully fulfilled numerous aspirations of the people and that, with the grace of the Almighty Allah; the Maldives had taken confident strides in development.

President Gayoom noted that the biggest constraint in the further development of Meedhoo was the shortage of land on the island. He announced that the Government would commence a project to reclaim additional land on the island in the near future.

In his address, President Gayoom praised the residents of Meedhoo for their exemplary show of corporation and unity. He urged the people to ensure that this valuable asset was sustained in the time ahead. He also highlighted the deep respect for senior citizens among the younger generations of Meedhoo.

Further President said that with the grace of the Almighty Allah the work to revise the Constitution will be completed soon.

President Gayoom was accorded a very warm welcome on his arrival at Meedhoo this morning. Senior island officials, community functionaries and a large number of members of the general public were present at the jetty to greet the President on his arrival. The youth of Meedhoo greeted the President with poetic verses of welcome.

A welcome song was also presented by the students of South Nilandhe Atoll School to greet the President on his arrival.
