Atolls Minister thanks Canadian Red Cross

Minister of Atolls Development, Ahmed Thasmeen Ali has said that the Canadian Red Cross played an important role in re-building the damages caused to the atolls after the 2004 Tsunami Disaster. He said this speaking at a ceremony held in Nasandhura Palace Hotel yesterday to end the programs conducted by Canadian Red Cross in Maldives.

Minister Thasmeen thanked Canadian Red Cross for the help they provided in cleaning the islands and to re-build the destroyed buildings. Thasmeen also thanked International Red Cross, Red Crescent and other international groups who helped in rebuilding the country after the Tsunami disaster. He said that it was with their help, Maldives has reached their goals so far.

Canadian Red Cross helped in re-building 30 buildings, establishing 79 centers in 74 islands to dump waste, rebuilding island offices, getting equipments and furniture for 20 island offices and in building pre-schools and social centers.

Manager of Emergency and recover program of Canadian Red Cross conducted in Maldives, Douglas Henderson, Director Dean Phillip Titzy and head of Human Assistance unit in Canadian High Commission in Srilanka, Charles Paker all spoke in the ceremony.
