President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has extended New Year greetings to the people.
New Year message by the President said that it was with immense pleasure that he extend hearty greetings and best wishes to all the people for a very happy new year.
The President said that it was his sincere hope that 2008 will bring happiness and prosperity to all our lives.
Mentioning that 2008 will be a historic year for the Maldives, as the country will take further steady strides towards liberal democracy; the President said that he was confident that many important milestones in the reform agenda will be attained in 2008.
The president said that with the grace of the Almighty Allah the work to revise the Constitution will be completed soon and we can look forward to establishing and strengthening the modern institutions and drafting the new pieces of legislation that are required under the revised Constitution.
In his New Year’s message, the President has also said that Maldives will hold its very first multi party election during the course of the year and his Government is firmly committed to ensuring that the 2008 presidential election is conducted in a free and a fair manner and in an atmosphere of peace and harmony and that he takes this opportunity to urge to all political parties and members of the general public to ensure that societal harmony and national unity are not compromised throughout the election process. The President said that we must show the world that the Maldives and its people can attain our aspirations of liberal democracy in a mature and corporative national spirit.
The President has mentioned that 2008 was an important year for our economy, as we complete a number of important projects and program and embark on new ones. He said that he was confident that our quest for further economic and social development will lead to further tangible improvements in our standard of living, welfare and well-being.
Ending the New Year’s message the President has said that there is no doubt that our most treasured national gift is Islam and that our greatest fortune is in being an Islamic state. He said that we must all strive to sustain and strengthen our beliefs and warned that we must not fall prey to the misguided doctrine of a few who preach violence and intolerance. The president said that for over 800 years, the Maldives has proudly carried the torch of Islam, and it is our national duty to ensure that our people continue to enjoy its radiance.
