Maama Kaafa Award held

The closing ceremony of the “Outstanding Maama Kaafa Award”, i.e., “Grandparents Award” organized by Television Maldives was held last night. At the ceremony which was given live coverage by TVM, the Outstanding Kaafa Award was received by Syed Hussain of Reethigasdhoshuge / Henvieru and Outstanding Maama Award was received by Marium Ahmed Didi of Rahdhebaige/ S. Hithadhoo. The Award and the cash prize of Rf.100, 000 were given away to the winners by the Minister of Gender and Family Aisha Mohamed Didi.

After receiving the Outstanding Kaafa Award, Syed Hussain said that he was very happy and that he was very grateful to Allah. The winner of the Outstanding Maama Award Marium Ahmed Didi said that the award was received due to the collective work of her family including her children, grandchildren, relatives, friends and others. She also expressed gratitude to Allah the Almighty for her success.

Speaking at the ceremony, Information Minister Nasheed said that this was a beginning and that he believed this was of national importance. Speaking at the ceremony Gender Ministry Aisha Mohamed Didi said that she was lucky to have seen her Great Great Grandma and Great Great Grandfather in addition to her Grandmother and Grandfather and as such she can value and fully appreciate the services and the role grandparent’s play. She also said although rest of the 13000 nominees for the Kaafa Maama Award did not win any Awards, they too were indeed outstanding Kaafas and Maamas and offered her congratulations.

Entertainments items were also held at the ceremony. Acclaimed singer Meena Hassaan performed some of his songs and entertainer Naabe’ brought many smiles and laughs from the invitees.

Special prizes were given to the 10 Kaafas and 10 Maamas by State Trading Organization (STO), Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) and Villa Group.

10 Kaafas and 10 Maamas were nominated for the Outstanding Maama Kaafa Award and 13 thousand names were initially put forward for the Award. TV Maldives say that 69000 people sent sms for the nominated 10 Maama and Kaafa.
