A jail facility has been opened under the name Male’ Jail and the Remand Center in Male’ operated by the Penitentiary Services is now closed.
Ahmed Shihan Director General of Department of Penitentiary and Rehabilitation Services speaking on Television Maldives said that instead of the Remand Center in Male’ a 2 storey building has been constructed and will be operated under the name Male’ Jail. Shihan revealed that Male’ Jail will only be temporary shelter for inmates brought to Male’ for various reasons and would be used to keep inmates long periods of time. He further said that Male’ jail would also be used as transit point for newly sentenced inmates waiting to be transferred to other jails.
Shihan further revealed that Male’ jail can accommodate 100 prisoners and has better security features. Each cell is equipped with showing facility in addition to a toilet and arrangements are in place for prisoners to come out to a compound area Shihan said.
The cells designed for people are 6 by 10 feet and has high security features such as laser wires, both invisible and visible. He said the opportunity to escape jail facility is almost non existent.
Shihan further said the 60 prisoners in the Remand Facility would be transferred to Male’ Jail yesterday and that the facility would be officially closed effective last Thursday.
