No support for transitional govt. in Meedhoo

People of Raa Atoll Meedhoo have said that they will not support the formation of an interim government. The people of Meedhoo revealed this speaking to members of press accompanying the Uthuru Arumaz to the northern islands of Maldives.

A group of Meedhoo residents while seated on a “Holhuashi”, (a communal gathering point located on the beach) said that they would not support a transitional arrangement and that they preferred a constitutionally mandated government. They also said that their opinion was not because they do not support specific political parties.

“We do support the concept of forming another government; we prefer the present government, why should we form another government when we have this one? We fully support President Maumoon, we have elected him” said the group gathered at the holhuashi.

Speaking at a press conference held on Uthuru Arumaz, MDP chairperson Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) said Meedhoo showed a completely different picture from other islands. He however said that he would not give up hope. According to Anni 20% of the people refused to allow the delegation of Uthuru Arumaz in to their homes. The delegation went to Meedhoo homes to brief the people on the concept of an interim arrangement. However he noted that many have accepted the invitation of National Unity Alliance.

President of the Raa Atoll Branch of MDP said that the lack of support for the Alliance was due to disputes between the executives of MDP and IDP.

Speaking at the press conference Mohamed Zuhair MDP member said that lot of support was received by the people of Meedhoo for the Alliance cause.

Banners and posters expressing lack of support for interim or transitional government was displayed a various locations in the island of Meedhoo. Many houses displayed posters indicating lack of support for interim arrangement. However even though such signs were posted on the walls of many houses, many house owners claimed that they were not aware of it.

The island also displayed banners and posters indicating support for interim or transitional government. The meeting of Alliance to be held in the Meedhoo School hall was held in front of the school out doors due poor attendance.
A meeting of the National Unity Alliance was held last night at Eydhafushi of Baa Atoll. The meeting at Eydhafushi was well received.
