Assailant confess he wanted to kill President
2 out of the 7 arrested on charges of attempted assassination of President Gayoom on the 8 of this month at Ha. Huvarafushi has confessed to the crime. According to Maldives Police 2 confessed are the assailant Mohamed Murushid age 20 and Ahmed Hafeez of Sosunge of that island. The names were revealed by the police at a press conference held to brief the media on the incident. At the press conference held to brief the media on the incident a video presentation was held. The presentation showed a video clip of President Gayoom shaking hands with the residents of Huvarafushi who had gathered to meet him up to the point of point attack by Murushid. Further the arrest of the Murushid as well as images of Murushid standing in the crowd with the knife.
Briefing the members of the press Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Abdulla Riyaz said that attack was a premeditated attack and was planned once the news of the President’s visit was revealed. ACP said that video in slow motion showed the assailant pushing the knife towards the President’s stomach and that it was the President’s alertness that saved him. ACP also said the video showed President saving himself.
However the video did not show the 15 year old Boy Scout Jaisham in action. When asked by Maidhu why Jaisham is not in the video, ACP explained that that the clip shown was a video clip of the “second attempt” and that upon close scurrility Jaisham’s hand can be seen and that blood spots on President’s shirt was that of Jaishams. It must be noted that ACP Riyaz did elaborate on the “second attempt”. It must also be noted the when President Gayoom was saved by Jaisham from the first attempt and the second attempt being foiled by the President himself, the video showed the apparent lack of security personnel around the President. Answering questions from the press on the matter ACP said that the fact that Murushid was brought under the control of the security forces was clear proof that security personnel was in total control of the situation. He also said that Huvarafushi was perceived to pose no threat to President Gayoom; president continued greeting the people the way President did.
Speaking to the press ACP Riyaz said that as the investigation was still at a very infant stage, it is too early for him to reveal on the motives behind the attack. He said the attack could be politically or religiously motivated or may be for completely other reasons. He also declined to reveal the names or any details of the other 5 arrested in connection to the assassination attempt.
ACP Riyaz further revealed that the police investigating team are still active in Huvarafushi.
