Minister of Education Zahiya Zareer has said that the cost of providing text books to all the student of the registered schools in the country for the year 2008 is Mrf.71 Million and the cost of fees for examinations stands at Mrf.60 Million.
Zahiya made the statement at a press conference held at studio 3 of TVM to brief the media on the government’s recent decision to provide text books and stationeries as well as exam fees for students from grade 1 to grade 12 of the country.
“We are have reached this figure based on the number of students in the schools at the end of the year, the figure may vary depending on the number of students present, we have reached the figure of Mrf.60 Million for exam fees on the assumption that every body would want the fees to be borne by the government, we will paying the exam fees for students taking exams through a school” said the Minister.
On asked whether the Ministry considered that returning the text books at the end of the year so that it may be given to another student in order to minimize costs, the Minister replied, “it’s something that our society should deeply consider, in many countries, even in international schools text are given on the basis that it should be returned at year end so that the book can be passed on to another student, Grade 8,9,10 use same text books, we have considered that idea and the students should return their books at the end of grade 10” .
Starting from December 1, the schools will be issuing vouchers for students to purchase text and other required materials for the academic year of 2008. Education Ministry has informed that these vouchers will enable the parents or guardians to purchase the text books and other materials as required.
