Male’ Municipality has banned loading and unloading of gas bottles to Male’ except from T jetty situated at western harbor of Male’.

Answering a question from Velidhoo News, Assistant Director General of Male’ Municipality Abdul Hameed Ali said the decision to impose such a ban effective 1 of December was reached after consultation with Villa Gas and Maldives Gas, 2 companies operating in Maldives involved in filling gas bottles.

“The main reason for the ban is due to the fact over thousands of bottles are being stacked on the pavement on the eastern harbor and this causing a lot of difficulties for others engaged in unloading and loading of goods, the reason is as these are stacked for long periods in blazing heat, it may be potentially dangerous, other reason is the amount of complaints we are getting because of the bottles blocking the pathways” said Abdul Hameed.

Abdul Hameed further said the gas companies when questioned why the bottles are being stacked on the pavement, the companies say that these are not empty bottles and that the bottles are stacked waiting to loaded on to the boat.

When the boats and dhonis are questioned they say that their responsibility is to offload the bottles and inform the company. The boat owners also say that it is the responsibility of the gas companies to take back the bottles said Abdul Hameed.

“Actually both parties are equally responsible, so we have decided to ban loading and unloading of gas bottles except from T jetty, even though loading and unloading is banned except from T jetty, gas bottles will be delivered to door step as usual, and for those wishing to buy gas bottles from Thilafushi arrangements are made to facilitate easy access” said Assistant Director General.

According to Male’ Municipality the ban takes into consideration safety of the general public.
