Shadow Cabinet Minister of MDP for Economic and Trade Mohamed Naseem Ibrahim, Nafaa Naseem, has said that in a MDP led government, economic decisions will always be reached after due considerations to the country’s economy.
Speaking at the office of the parliamentary group, Nafaa Naseem said that the government is making a lot of decisions without any consideration to effects it would have on the country’s economy. He said that these decisions are mainly taken just to fulfill the government’s political agenda. Nafaa further said that government’s irresponsibility is indicative of the recent increment given to Island Chiefs salaries and the government decision to grant free text books and other materials to all the students of the country.
In addition to speaking on the various aspects of MDP’s economic policy and the party’s aims, Nafaa Naseem also spoke on the deficiencies of the government.
According to Naseem, the main aims of MDP are to widen the scope of economic activity and to increase the earnings of the workers, and to increase economic self sufficiency. To provide economic opportunity to all concerned in a more equal and fair manner, to develop the country’s economy, and to provide opportunity for small and business owners to develop their businesses and to facilitate means to develop such business in a more easy and accessible manner.
Speaking on the government’s deficiencies Nafaa Naseem said the present government lacked leadership and vision for economic development. He noted that although Maldives achieved some development, in the past 30 years, such development was not based on any rational planning.
Nafaa Naseem noted that due to government and its company’s activities in trade, many traders are faced with a lot of difficulties. The fact that government companies are given a lot of privileges and concessions not given to ordinary companies and traders limits the business opportunities of private traders and companies.
Nafaa Naseem indicated that he will speak on the topic in detail at a later date.
