Director General of Ministry of Education Imadh Solih has said that the standard of those students obtaining diplomas in Maldives is questionable.

Speaking to Velidhoo Community Imadh Solih said that questions do arise regarding the educational standard of those students obtaining diplomas in Maldives. He said that student’s mostly taking diploma courses are teachers and that he is getting complaints from various schools regarding the educational standard of these students joining the school systems.

“I do get a lot of complaints from various schools regarding the educational standard of those students who join the school systems after completing one year at Faculty of Education” said Imadh.

Imadh noted that there are many improvements that need to be incorporated to improve the standard to the required level.

“First thing is we have to change the one year program to a 2 year program, I think the Faculty is already considering the change, I am not too sure about it; secondly we have to implement a system where we employ these students on probation basis for a year instead of employing them on a permanent basis, we call this period an induction period, we have to provide these newly employed teachers experience by attaching them to an experienced teacher during the induction period” said Imadh Solih.

“As I said earlier our limited number of teachers do not allow us to proceed with such an induction program where we have two teachers for a single subject, but we to study and evaluate our human resources to find a solution, the induction program must be provided, in many parts of the world induction program is stipulated by law” said Imadh Solih.

Director General noted that a student leaving the faculty with a diploma or a degree does not necessarily mean that he or she is a competent teacher but he or she has to work under experienced teachers to gain experience. He noted that this not being carried out in the school systems.

“Instead of giving experience to the new recruits, what is going on is we are sending experienced foreign teachers to atolls or transferring them to other schools just to obtain employment for the new recruits” said Imadh.

Imadh questioned “we have to ask ourselves whether this is the best way for our system, is it necessary to carry on just provide employment to Maldivian, we are taking about quality education of many young boys and girls, and we have to have certain quality and standard”.

Imadh noted under most circumstances employing a newly graduated Maldivian from the faculty create certain problems as this graduate lack the necessary experience.

He questioned the employment process where the candidates are interviewed for accessing the suitability for the job.

“Question is do we interview the foreign teachers with years of experience holding degrees and masters or do we interview these new graduates, at present we just offer jobs to these graduates without any interview just by having a look at the diploma or degree issued by the Faculty” asked Imadh.

“I am not talking about not giving jobs to faculty graduates, what we are doing now is slowly replacing the experienced foreign teachers as we employ more and more Maldivians” said Imadh Solih.

Imadh noted that it is high time that employment process of teachers were reviewed.

“What I am saying is it is time we changed our employment process, we have to provide experience to these graduates by keeping them under probation for a year and once they prove their proficiency then we can employ them on a permanent basis” said Imadh, Director General of Ministry of Education.
