Report: Jaxy

The land on which hotel Mercury is constructed has been taken back by the government. According to Male’ Municipality the land has been taken over in order to construct a small park as well as to widen the street that leads to Orchid Magu from Majeed Magu.

Answering a question from Velidhoo News, Abdul Hameed Ali Assistant Director General of Male’ Municipality said that an equivalent land has already been given to the owner of Hotel Mercury.

“The purpose of taking this plot of land is mainly to widen the street; however a small park will be constructed on the empty land adjacent to eastern side of the street, the park will be constructed after widening the street, the owner of Aasmaanuge where the Mercury Hotel is has been given compensation plus an equivalent land, the owner of Aasmaanuge were given vacant land west of the park in Majeedhee Magu” said Abdul Hameed.

According to Abdul Hameed the widening of the street will be started next year. The purpose of constructing a park is to make the best use of the land rather making the street too wide says Abdul Hameed.

Some are claiming the land of Mercury Hotel was taken back for political reasons.
Velidhoo News asked Abdul Hameed whether there is any truth in these stories. Hameed said that even before the registration of political parties in the country, Municipality had plans to widen the street.

“Even before the registration of political parties, Municipality had made plans for the widen of that street, this decision was made nearly eight years ago, so there is no political agenda behind it and we have been reminding the owner of Aasmaanuge from time to time” said Hameed, Assistant Director General of Male’ Municipality.

Mercury Hotel closed late last month, was used by the main opposition party, MDP, for many party activities. The area in front of Mercury Hotel has been a gathering point of many demonstrations.
