President extends Republic Day greetings

11 November 2007
Report: Soodh

President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has extended warm greetings and sincere good wishes to the people, on the jubilant occasion of Republic Day.

President in a text message said “On the joyous occasion of the Republic Day of the Maldives, I wish to extend warm greetings and sincere good wishes to the beloved people.

As we celebrate the 39th anniversary of our Second Republic, the true champions of republican governance in the Maldives have been the people. By definition, a republic is founded on the people. The shareholders of a republic are the people. The social and economic progress attained by the country over the years is a shining example of public participation in governance and national development.

This year’s Republic Day has coincided with an important period in our national development, with the constitutional reform work of the People’s Special Majlis nearing its completion. I commend the members of the Special Majlis for their commitment to delivering the promise of a new Constitution to the people in the near future. There is no doubt that the Government’s democratic reform agenda and the associated constitutional revision work will have a strong bearing on the further development of the country and the prosperity of the people.

My sincere hope is that the new Constitution will consolidate the country’s Islamic faith and usher in a modern liberal democracy with stronger human rights safeguards. The new Constitution must fulfill the aspirations of the people.

I pray to the Almighty Allah to grant further opportunities for the people to attain greater prosperity under republican governance! May He also bless our efforts to strengthen our Republic, and sustain the political stability, peace and harmony prevailing in the Maldives today!”
