Report: Ayya
If President Maumoon is committing constitutional offence, then Husnu Al Suood and all Members of the Special Majlis affiliated to MDP is also committing constitutional offence says Mohamed Hussain Shareef, Mundhu,Presidential Spokesperson. Mundhu made the statement in response to an article published in Velidhoo News on the 14 of this month, via a release issued by President Office and signed by Mundhu.
President’s Spokesperson Mundhu, in the release said, Husnu Al Suood’s allegation against President Maumoon is totally false and does not hold any water.
Mudhu also said in the release that if President Maumoon is guilty of any constitutional crime then Husnu Al Suood and the Members of the Special Majlis affiliated to MDP too is guilty of the same offense.
“Political parties commenced operation after the formation of the Special Majlis and it may be assumed that Husnu Al Suood and other Members affiliated to Special Majlis are engaged in the promotion of their party even on the Majlis floor” said the release.
“As part of his efforts to introduce a modern democracy in to the country initiated on June 9, 2004, the authority to form and operate political parties in the country was granted by a decision reached by the consensus of the Majlis, the formation of political parties have led to many Members of the Special Majlis and People’s Majlis to be affiliated to political parties and it has been a while since Members have started acting with party spirit on the Majlis floor, as such it is noted that Husnu Al Suood’s inability to state which Bill or which Article of the constitution is conflicted by President Maumoon’s political affiliation: establishing a political party is not an offence and being a member of a party is not an offense either” Said Mundhu concluding the release.
In an interview granted to Velidhoo News on last Wednesday, Suood told Velidhoo News that it is a constitutional offence to be the head of the government while being the Leader of a political party. He further said that the people of Maldives did not elect President Gayoom to discharge the responsibilities of his office whilst being attached to a political party.
