No information given to any foreign source – Police

19 November 2007
Report: Ayya

Police did not question me – Ali Rameez.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdulla Riyaz has said that police has not provided any information to any foreign party regarding Sultan Park investigation of September 29. He made the statement when asked about the article posted on The Hindu, written by the Parveen Swami Associate Editor of The Hindu. The article written under the heading “Social dislocation feeds Maldives Islamism”, Parveen writes Sheikh Fareedh and acclaimed ex singer Ali Rameez is currently being interrogated in connection with the Sultan Park investigation.

Abdulla Riyaz, Assitant Commissioner of Police was called up on by Velidhoo News, as this information was not released to media here in Maldives. In addition during his visit to Maldives last week he has written and posted an article on The Hindhu linking the terror suspects of Sultan Park explosion to terrorist’s organizations in Pakistan and India. In the report posted on the 14 of this month, he had made references to the authorities conducting the investigations.

Velidhoo News questioned Parveen where he obtained such information, when he was at TVM giving information in the capacity of an expert on counter terrorism. However Parveen declined saying he would provide answers later. Parveen later agreed to meet Velidhoo Newsu and Minvan news at Nasandhura Palace Hotel. At the meeting at Nasandhura, Parveen said that his information was based on information obtained from parties involved in the investigation. Parveen further said that he did obtain information from FBI as well as from other sources. He repeatedly refused to reveal his other sources. However he indicated that he met and held discussions with top level officers of the Maldives Defense Force. Parveen gave the impression that Maldives Police shared detailed information regarding the Sultan Park probe with him.

In the article posted on The Hindhu on the 16 of this month Parveen had included comments from the Home Minister Abdulla Kamaaluhdheen. According to the Article Kamaaluhdheen said, “I think we still need to be alert”, and “Both the available intelligence and plain and simple prudence makes this imperative”. In concluding the article Parveen wrote yesterday, a comment from Mohamed Nasheed Minister of Legal Reform and Information and Arts was included. According to The Hindhu the Legal Reform Minister said “We turn out 10,000 ‘O’-level graduates each year, but the kinds of white-collar jobs they expect aren’t on offer. We need to find ways to absorb them into useful economic activities. We always thought prosperity would solve all our problems, but are now realizing there are distributive and social issues that must be addressed.” Praveen wrote that many parents are delighted that their children turn to religious groups, since it keeps them away from drugs and gangs.

Little is known of the activities of Praveen Swami, however from his three articles posted in The Hindhu it can be seen that he met and held discussions with Home Minister Abdulla Kamaaluhdheen and Minister of Legal Reform Information and Arts Mohamed Nasheed,
Velidhoo News was unable get a comment from either of them on the issue.

However in his most recent article Parveen has revealed information regarding famous ex pop artist Ali Rameez and cleric Sheikh Fareed. Parveen has stated that both of them were being questioned with regard to the Sultan Park bomb blast.

When
Velidhoo News contacted Assistant Commissioner Abdulla Riyaz, he replied that police did not give any such information to Parveen. However Parveen at the meeting in Nasandhura told Velidhoo News that Police provided him with off the record information. Parveen further said on his way to Maldives he stopped in Sri Lanka and obtained some information on the investigation as well. He added that what ever he write is based on meticulous investigations.

Parveen in his article under the heading Social dislocation feeds Maldives Islamism, had claimed Ibrahim Fareedh as brother of Ali Rameez. Ali Rameez when contacted by
Velidhoo News said “Fareedh is not my brother, and Police never questioned on the Sultan Park explosion, I don’t know who you are referring to and I can’t understand why he wrote such things about me” said ex pop artist Ali.

Parveen Swami’s visit to Maldives is a puzzle. His interviews with government Ministers and media briefing held at TVM indicate he was warmly received. As such many question the reasons for writing such articles with incorrect information. Many who went the briefing held on the 16 of this month claim that his article of posted on the 14 of this month on The Hindhu does not reflect his vast experience on counter terrorism. His capabilities as an expert were seriously questioned when he wrote incorrect information regarding Ali Rameez. He has repeatedly told
Velidhoo News that contact could not be revealed.

Velidhoo News contacted Abdulla Riyaz Assistant Commisioner and asked why he does not provide off the record information to local media. Abdull Riyaz said police have not provided information in any such manner. Riyaz said information on the sultan Park explosion is given very openly and is given live coverage by TVM.

Police has revealed that 10 suspects wanted in the investigations are now in Pakistan and that their arrest is being sought with the assistance of Interpol.
