Reserved seats not necessary for women in Parliament – IDP

Umar Naseer President of Islamic Democratic Party, IDP, has said that women’s rights are protected in Maldives and that seats should not be reserved for the women in the People’s Majlis.

In a release issued by IDP, Umar Naseer has said that in the south Asian region Maldives is the champion in the protection of women’s rights.

“Maldives is the champion in the protection of women’s rights in the region, we are even better than India and Pakistan , however this does not mean we have achieved everything, there is still room for improvement” said Umar Naseer.

The news release further says, Maldives offers equal opportunity for women in most areas and that it is not necessary to reserve special seats for women in the parliament as women have no restriction to compete for seats in the parliament.

“The constitution afford equal opportunity for women, we do not have give equal rights to women, we should give them equal opportunity, women are not allowed to complete for presidency but that all everywhere else they have equal opportunity, so there is no need to have reserved seats in the parliament for women the reason is they can compete for seats in the parliament, women have equal opportunity to succeed as well, in parliaments all over the world women occupy comparatively less seats than men” said IDP President Umar Naseer.

President of Islamic Democratic Party Umar Naseer is presidential contender for the 2008 election. He has on many forums said that Maldives require a democracy based on Islamic principles. Umar has said that he is totally against the introduction of a liberal democracy.
