Dress Code for courts becomes effective

The dress code established by Ministry of Justice to be followed by those going to Courts has become effective as of 12 of this month.

According to Justice who violates the dress code will be evicted from courts. According to dress code dressing in a manner that conceals the identity of a person, wearing of revealing dresses, wearing of shorts, wearing of collarless T shirts and wearing ornaments which conflicts Islamic beliefs is forbidden.

Media Coordinator of Justice Ministry as well as the Registrar of the Family Court Ibrahim Waheed Ali told Velidhoo News that even before the Code was established, people who dress concealing their identities were barred from government offices.

“So far nobody has objected to this Dress Code, there are no punishments prescribed under the Code, but those summoned by the court must comply with it or else will declared as not being present, and the punishment prescribed for those who are do not appear to court will taken against them” said Waheed.

Velidhoo News contacted Ahmed Saleem, President of Human Rights Commission for his comment on the ban of those who wear face veils, dresses that conceal the identity, from entering Maldivian courts; he replied that wearing of face veil is a personal freedom.

“However in every society one has to follow the rules and procedures in force, especially one has to follow rules that have been established to protect the security interests of the country” said Saleem.

Saleem said the dress code is meant to be followed whilst in the premises of the court.
