Report: Soodh

President of Islamic Democratic Party, IDP, Umar Naseer, have said that Maldives need an Islamic democracy and not a liberal democracy. Umar made the statement while discussing the current politics of the country on a 101 East, a program aired by news channel Al Jazeera.

“We don’t need a liberal democracy, what Maldives need is an Islamic democracy, the reason why I say we don’t need a liberal democracy is clear, the word liberal, liberalism means freedom so a liberal democracy means a system where full freedom is given, in such a system one can practice any religion they want, have same sex marriage, such a system will allow adultery, one can consume alcohol, one doesn’t have to fast, when you say a liberal democracy these are things that comes in to mind, a liberal democracy will allow all these things” said Umar explaining what a liberal democracy means in order to prove his point.

Umar went on to say that he is not opposed to democracy but against liberal democracy. He noted that international media would know that an Islamic democracy limits will be impose limits to those evils mentioned as such it would be better to have an Islamic democracy.

IDP president further claimed that MDP Chairperson Mohamed Nasheed, Anni, and DRP Council Member Mohamed Nasheed wanted a western style democracy to please the west.

“Why I said so in an international audience is because I don’t want to support the west, what I gathered from the panel discussions that day were that both the Nasheeds wanted to please the west, I went there to make my stand” said Umar when asked why he made such comments in a program targeted for an international audience.

Velidhoo News contacted MDP Chairperson for a comment on the issue. Anni said that Maldives need a liberal democracy.

Anni said “Umar Naseer doesn’t know what he is talking about, he doesn’t understand what a liberal democracy is, he doesn’t even understand what liberal means and where it came from, what I would say is Maldives need a liberal democracy”

Anni further said that liberal democracy means a government runs by the people for the people.
