Answering a question from Velidhoo News, Male’ MP Ibrahim Ismail, Ibra, has said that some are purposely twisting the meaning of democracy in order to take inappropriate advantage.
Ibra said that some are purposely saying that democracy is against Islamic principles while others say the best democracy is defined in Islam. Ibra notes that these people are spreading these talks in order to confuse the general public.

When asked which type of democracy best suite Maldives, he replied that Maldives need a liberal democracy. However he added that the liberal democracy should exist within the framework of Islamic principles. Liberal democracy can be defined as the best way to protect the people’s rights and freedom.

“Liberal democracy is not outside the boundaries of Islam, those who talk in that manner do not really understand what democracy means” said Ibra.

The two biggest political parties in the country, Maldivian Democratic Party MDP and Dhivehi Rahyithunge Party, DRP are going for a liberal democracy while Adhaalath party is supporting a modern democracy which does not contradict Islamic principles.
