Report: Uken
Society of Women against Drugs, SWAD, has urged Home Minister Abdulla Kamaaluhdheen to take urgent steps to stop convicts from infiltrating drugs and mobile phones in to jail.
The letter sent by SWAD urging Home Minister to take urgent steps was copied to the President’s Office, Department of Penitentiary and Rehabilitation as well as National Narcotics Control Bureau. Velidhoo News has obtained a copy of the letter as well.
The letter sent by SWAD notes that government had so far failed to take any concrete steps to curb the ever growing drug issue. The letter notes that a large number of convicts in jail regularly use drugs and that a large percentage of the youth population is becoming increasingly dependent on drugs.
SWAD notes that as a result, theft, street violence and various other social issues are on the increase. SWAD also notes that already the jails as well as the rehabilitation centers are all full.
The letter sent of Kmaaluhdheen notes that jails are one place where drugs can easily be obtained. Further the letter questions the security of the jails as many from time to time have escaped and robbed shops and caused the general public alarm and fear.
