Report: Soodh

American Ambassador designated to Maldives and Sri Lanka Robert Blake has said that he would like to see a fair, free and inclusive election held next year and that US embassy would provide all necessary support to facilitate such an election.

Speaking to members of the press at the American corner at the National Library, Ambassador Blake said if Maldivian government requests American embassy is quite willing to arrange observers to come to Maldives to observe the process of the forthcoming presidential election of 2008.

Blake further expressed his hope that even if the completion of constitutional reform cannot be achieved by end November, Special Majlis would complete as soon as possible.

Ambassador Blake said that he is confident that Maldivian government would make the elections of 2008, fair, free and inclusive one.

Speaking at round table talks held at Nasandhura Palace yesterday, ex Foreign Minister and member of Open Society Association Dr. Ahmed Shaheed said that it is very important to form a united government before the envisaged free and fair election.

Dr. Shaheed further said that he hoped that President Maumoon will not compete in the next presidential elections and would open the opportunity for new comers to compete.

“During the last 30 years, President Maumoon has worked considerably to bring reform to the country, this is an opportunity for him to step down with honor, it is important that he make use of this opportunity” said Dr. Shaheed.

While US Ambassador has expressed his hope for a fair and free elections President Maumoon last Monday has said that he is determined to make the 2008 elections free, fair and inclusive election.
