Adhaalath Party has said that they will not use religion as a mean for gaining power during any elections. Members representing other parties have been saying that Adhaalath is putting so much emphasis on religion that they would use religion as a tool to gain power.

However, speaking to N. Velidhoo Community, party spokesman Asadhullah Shaafee said that it is sad that people think in such a manner. He said that it was simply a hypothesis derived by people without any base to it. He said that by no means the party would consider such a move.

Nevertheless, he noted that the Maldives is a 100 percent Muslim country and that the party has an obligation and responsibility as Maldivians to promote Islam in the country. He said that the party would continue to support in creating awareness among people on religious issues.

Further he said that the party is working towards a just society and it will work for the benefit and welfare of the people. Asadhullah said that people are making such stories since the party is promoting democratic values.

During the August 18 referendum held in the Maldives to decide on the system of government, Adhaalath party supported and promoted presidential form of government. Hence, some members in their campaigns have talked about the link to religion and democracy to Islam, whereby prompting the public to make such hypothesis that the party would use religion as a mean to gain power.
