Island committee elections will not be fair – Umar

24 September 2007
Report: Soodh

Islamic Democratic Party, IDP leader Umar Naseer has said that the scheduled elections on 27 October 2007 would not be a fair and free election. He said that it would simply be another election for its sake.

Speaking to Velidhoo Community, Umar said that the reason for him to say that it would not be fair is the fact that it is being organized by the Ministry of Atolls Development and not by an independent election commission.

He also noted that the current committee elections are based on a mandate which has no basis. Therefore, he suggested that it would be influenced by senior officials.

Male’ Member for the People’s Majlis Mohamed Nasheed (Colonel) told Velidhoo Community that he hopes to see that the election goes fairly without any problems.

Former Atolls Minister Mohamed Waheed (Dean) wanted to establish island and atoll councils instead of the island development committees. However, the Ministry is implementing the previous ways with election of island committees.
