President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has received a letter from the Commonwealth Secretary-General Mr. Donald McKinnon, containing the commonwealth’s observations and recommendations following the 18 August referendum to determine the preferred system of government in the Maldives.

The letter highlighted many positive aspects of the referendum process while also noting some issues of concern to be addressed before future elections. Mr. McKinnon particularly welcomed the fact that environment for the referendum was calm; that there was a high vote turn-out; that women were well represented as voters, polling officials and party agents; and that many young people participated, stated the press release from President’s Office.

It further stated that the Commonwealth Secretary General urged the government to build on the “clear result in favour of a presidential system of government” by accelerating the implementation of the reform process.

It also said that Mr. McKinnon called to work with all political parties to ensure that the People’s Special Majlis deadline of 30th November for completion of the new constitution is met.

Mr. McKinnon has also offered to arrange a Commonwealth-facilitated conference as a forum for reaching consensus on key issues.
