Maldivian Democratic Party, MDP President Dr. Mohamed Munawwar has said that Atoll Chiefs and Island Chiefs will be elected within six months provided that the party wins next year’s presidential election.

Speaking at the General Meeting of the party, Dr. Munawwar said that it is realistic and would definitely implement since it is vital for the development of a democratic process in atolls.

He said that he sees no reason why the government is electing island development committees without electing island chiefs and atoll chiefs. He said that island and atoll chiefs are responsible for doing most of the work, while those committees are symbolic.

Dr. Munawwar also noted that these committees do not possess any legal support and no guiding frameworks are in place.

Earlier, in an interview to DhiFM, Dr. Munawwar has said that he has the capability to lead the country if elected as president of Maldives. He also said that he has the experience and ability to lead the country, provided that the people elect him as the president.
